Branding and Identity

A sampling of logo designs that I’ve worked on.

Peripheral Vision

You’ve probably heard of people seeing something ‘out of the corner of their eye‘. Scientifically speaking it comes from times when our ancestors would be busy doing cave paintings (or whatever our ancestors did to pass the time) and they still needed to be alert of anything sneaking up on them. I suppose the modern day equivalent would be people spending their time on Facebook and needing to be alert of their boss sneaking up on them.

Close up of an eye.

In 2009 a study was performed at Kansas State University* on peripheral vision. The basic version of it is that people were shown photos of places alternately with the centre missing and the edges missing, they only got to see this photos for a moment and it turns out we can much more easily identify ‘scenes’ with our peripheral vision than our central vision – you can actually see an example here. It goes for more than just scenes as well, part of the study showed that people reacted to fear inducing things almost twice as fast when the object was in their peripheral vision. I can’t help but envision scientists waving spiders and rodents at people.

What does this actually mean?

Ankh-Morpork, the boardgame

The DiscworldWell this is news to me, clearly I haven’t been keeping up on things as much as I should.

Two of my great loves are being brought together – Discworld and Boardgames. From what I understand the basic plot is that Vetinari has disappeared and some of the other Lords are moving in to take control, Vetinari being Vetinari of course is still around, having secretly returned to the city and is working his own agenda. I haven’t got this yet but I hope to have a game in a week or two, in the meantime Treefrog Games and Board Game Geek are the places to look for more information.

Things get even better, there’s another Discworld game on the horizon as well – ‘Guards! Guards!‘ is being produced by Z-Man games (publishers of my favourite game ‘Tales of Arabian Nights’). I don’t know too much about this beyond what is available on Board Game Geek, but I have no doubt it will be adorning my shelves when it is out.

I’ll have to nag Rules of Play and find out when they’re getting them in stock.

Websites

A small selection of some of the websites I have developed in the past.

Why?

Well doushite.co.uk is back up and running. I’ll be once again using it as a very intermittent blog and general personal site.

Doushite is a Japanese word, it is pronounced roughly as ‘dosh-tay‘ and it means ‘Why?’. I first starting using it as a website name back around 2000-2001 when I was in school; it was a bit of a joke (being a teenager it was surprisingly funny at the time) and it has just kind of stuck.
